Women in World History

This website provides an introduction to sati, the practice of widows immolating themselves on the funeral pyre of their husbands. It discusses the origins and history of sati, as well as some myth/legends that ground the practice within the Hindu tradition. The website also contains valuable primary sources, such as letters written by individuals who witnessed sati during the 1700s-1800s and individuals who objected to the practice. However, it does not include a pro-sati position. The website also contains engravings of sati in practice. This website is valuable when looking at the roles of women within the Hindu tradition. It is written in an objective manner.
