The Place of Women in Buddhism

This website is a published version of a lecture given by Swarna de Silva to the Midlands Buddhist Society (UK) in 1988. This article discusses the position of women within the Buddhist tradition, both historically (in pre-Buddhist India) and in modern times (the secular position of women). The article describes the order of Buddhist nuns and the controversy surrounding the creation and continuation of this order. This website would be an asset for both teacher and student as the position of women within the Buddhist tradition is not examined much in either the SR or TR.
