Origins of the group: In 2006, the Jewish Community Havura was established to serve St. John's, Newfoundland and the surrounding area.
The Havura began with about twenty members who were interested in developing an inclusive and egalitarian community with programmes and services to accommodate many different approaches to Judaism, including a commitment to social justice issues. Since 2006, the membership has more than doubled and the programmes and services offered by the Havura have grown considerably. Many of the members are from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Activities & Goals: The Havura hosts a biweekly Shabbat service and dinner in members' homes, as well as events related to festivals and Holy Days. Students in St. John's and the surrounding areas are welcome and are encouraged to participate.
The Jewish Community Havura organizes and supports community lectures, concerts, social action events, and Jewish education at all levels. Succot, Chanukah, Purim, Simchat Torah and Passover are particularly festive times for the Havura and its members. We also host services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. In cooperation with the Atlantic Jewish Council, the Jewish Community Havura hosts a Holocaust Memorial service in the spring of each year.
Children and youth are welcome. The Jewish Community Havura offers a Hebrew school for children of all ages, which is run by parents, and also prepares girls and boys for Bat and Bar Mitzvahs. Adult education programmes are also provided.
The Jewish Community Havura is involved in an extensive array of outreach activities. We provide suitable speakers for schools and educational sessions.
