Spain
Do you speak Spanish? Do you want to become much better at speaking and reading it? And how about experiencing Spanish music, folklore, history, movies, dance, literature and daily life? If yes, then take note of the newest of the study abroad language programs, the Department of French and Spanish Language, Civilization and Culture program, which promises all this and of course, more. Students who have completed the first two university-level Spanish courses (Spanish 1000 and 1001 or equivalent) are eligible to enroll in the three-week field school. The program was in fact specifically created by Memorial University and the University de la Coruña, of La Coruña, Spain. "Students will be immersed in the Spanish atmosphere," says Dr. Messod Salama of the French and Spanish Department. "There will be total immersion with Spanish speakers, and [the students will be able to] absorb and assimilate Spanish culture. That is a very comprehensive way of practicing, living and studying language and culture. What they have studied in class, they will be able to witness and experience." Dr. Salama is bringing the first group of students to La Coruña this summer.
There are 15 full days of classes during the stay in La Coruña (9:00 to 1:00), taught by four professors at the University de la Coruña. Students will live in the residence of the University, and will participate in excursions coordinated by the University. Dr. Salama foresees at lease two trips that will be made outside the city of La Coruña, and further traveling to Santiago de Compostela. As will, he adds that he will be there to tutor students with any difficulties that they may have and monitor their progress. In the future, Dr. Salama anticipates expanding this program to include students from other Atlantic universities. This summer, however, it is solely Memorial University students who will enjoy and benefit from this immersion into Spanish life.
